Things that occur can be remembered for a moment or a lifetime. But for the believer, “remembering” is a crucial component of this walk of faith. Remembering what GOD has done for you is important for gratitude towards GOD. It is also important for the building of faith. Our faith must be built because there are greater levels and greater adversity that we will experience. So why do we tend to forget what GOD has done for us? Why do we tend to forget HIS faithfulness and character in times of adversity? GOD knows that the adversary tries to dilute our memories of GOD’s goodness to wear us down in the good fight of faith. The adversary wants to get us to believe the lie that GOD does not care about us and will not come through. But GOD has, throughout time, reminded HIS people to remember!
There are so many scriptures that show us the importance of remembering the things GOD has done for us.
“Celebrate this Festival of Unleavened Bread, for it will remind you that I brought your forces out of the land of Egypt on this very day. This festival will be a permanent law for you; celebrate this day from generation to generation. “Remember, these instructions are a permanent law that you and your descendants must observe forever. When you enter the land the Lord has promised to give you, you will continue to observe this ceremony. Then your children will ask, ‘What does this ceremony mean?’ And you will reply, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt. And though he struck the Egyptians, he spared our families.’” When Moses had finished speaking, all the people bowed down to the ground and worshiped.”
Exodus 12:17, 24-27 NLT
“I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”
John 14:25-26 NLT
“Therefore, I will always remind you about these things—even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have been taught. And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live. so I will work hard to make sure you always remember these things after I am gone. For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes when he received honor and glory from God the Father. The voice from the majestic glory of God said to him, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.” We ourselves heard that voice from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts.”
2 Peter 1:12-13, 15-19 NLT
So why is it so essential for the believer to put things in their “remembrance.” The result of the believer’s propensity to forget is this: lack of faith. Remembering fuels your faith. It allows you to recall testimonies. It reinforces the true character of GOD to produce hope in time of adversity. It allows you to endure to the end (Matthew 24).
The adversary knows the lack of emphasis by the believer to “hid things in their heart so they might not sin against GOD” and the strategy of our adversary is to rob us of hope and faith in GOD.
Remembering is our PREVENTATIVE DEFENSE! Remember what GOD has said and what HE has done! LORD, I repent when I forget!
What do you need to remember today (and everyday)?
